  5. Eudora Pro 4.1 introduces exciting new features and capabilities including
  6. the ability to check and send mail using multiple accounts simultaneously in
  7. the background while you continue to work, support for QuickTime 3.0 for 
  8. Windows for embedding and viewing a large number of supported file formats, 
  9. and the ability to import settings, mail and address books from Microsoft 
  10. Outlook, Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator.

  23. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  24. ----------------------

  26. To use Eudora Pro for Windows Version 4.1,
  27. you must have the following:
  28.  
  29. -  IBM PC or compatible.
  30. -  Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 or above. (note:  it is 
  31.    recommended that you have the latest service pack for each operating
  32.    system)
  33. -  Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking package
  34. -  A mail account with an Internet Service Provider
  35. -  Access to your mail account via a modem or Internet-style network
  36.    connection.  
  37.

  39. INSTALLATION
  40. --------------
  41.  
  42. To install Eudora Pro:
  43.  
  44. 1.   Exit any applications you are running.
  45.  
  46. 2.   Double-click on the .exe file you downloaded to start the Setup program.
  47.  
  48. 3.   Read the Welcome screen, then click the Next button.  The Software 
  49.      License Agreement is displayed.
  50.  
  51. 4.   Read the Software License Agreement, and if you agree to the terms, 
  52.      click Yes. You can also save and/or print the Agreement by selecting its
  53.      text, pressing Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard, and then pasting it 
  54.      into a text processing application such as Notepad.
  55.  
  56. 5.   You have the option of installing Qualcomm's PureVoice voice 
  57.      Player/Recorder application.  If you wish to install PureVoice, check
  58.      the appropriate box.
  59.  
  60. 5.   Specify a directory to install Eudora, then click Next.
  61.      
  62. 6.   Verify that the displayed settings are correct, then click Next (or use 
  63.      the Back button if you need to go back and make changes).
  64.  
  65. 7.   Eudora is installed in the destination directory.
  66.  
  67. 8.   Eudora can take advantage of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x or 4.x and 
  68.      Apple Quicktime 3.x for displaying advanced HTML and embedded images.  
  69.      The installer will detect if you do not have these products installed 
  70.      and provide information on how to download from the Eudora web site.
  71.  
  72. 9.   You are prompted for whether or not you want to view the Eudora README
  73.      file.  Click Yes to view the Eudora README.

  76. CHANGES IN 4.1

  79. NEW FEATURES
  80. ------------
  81.  
  82. Be sure to read the Whatsnew.pdf file which describes in detail what some of
  83. the new features are for Eudora Pro 4.1.

  85. *    Background send and receive has been implemented.  To see the actions 
  86.      taking place in the background, select Tools-Task Status.  The 
  87.      Whatsnew.pdf, which is installed to the directory where Eudora is
  88.      installed, contains a detailed description of how background sending and
  89.      receiving of email works in Eudora.
  90.  
  91. *    Account Wizard has been revamped to provide more options such as the
  92.      ability import settings, mail and address book information from 
  93.      Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator.
  94.      
  95. *    Support for Apple Quicktime 3.0 is provided.  This allows you to embed 
  96.      and view a huge number of image file formats directly in your email 
  97.      messages.
  98.  
  99. *    Support for shift-New and Wizard-based "Advanced" new personality.
  100.  
  101. *    Added support for parameter substitution in mailto: URL's:
  102.      $Name$ for real name
  103.      $Email$ for return address (without real name)
  104.      $User$ for Only username portion of email address.
  105.  
  106. *    Better error message for outgoing messages that couldn't be sent because
  107.      the recipient was invalid/denied.  It now returns more information from
  108.      the SMTP server.
  109.  
  110. *    If you use Leave Mail On Server (LMOS), then be aware that Eudora Pro 
  111.      4.1 performs this task differently than previous versions.  If you go
  112.      back to Eudora Pro 4.0.x, then your LMOS mail will be re-downloaded.
  113.      NOTE:  You will not lose any of your mail.
  114.  
  115. SECURITY
  116. --------
  117. This version inlcudes the fix for the potential security breach in Eudora 
  118. Pro that could allow someone to maliciously send a file attachment to an
  119. e-mail causing files to erase or simply install a virus.
  120.  
  121. We now give you additional options via the user interface to control
  122. executable code that may be present in some form in a message.
  123.  
  124. *    Tools|Options|Viewing mail|Allow executables in HTML content. This is
  125.     OFF by default.
  126.  
  127. *    Tools|Options|Extra Warnings|Warn me when I launch a program from a 
  128.     message. This is ON by default. 
  129.  
  130. STARTUP/INTERFACE
  131. -----------------
  132. *    The progress bar displays activity for sending/receiving mail based 
  133.         on bytes. For received messages, each message gets an equal slice and
  134.         the progress within each slice is done based on the number of bytes
  135.         received.
  136.  
  137. *    Added "SMTP Server(Outgoing)" field to the Getting Started category 
  138.     of the Options dialog.
  139.  
  140. *    Special|Forget password(s) now brings up a window to choose any or 
  141.     multiple personalities.
  142.  
  143. *    Implemented a EUDORA.INI switch to control the Overwrite mode. 
  144.         Setting "AllowOverwriteMode=0" makes sure that the overwrite mode can
  145.         never be accidently activated.  It is possible if using the CTRL-INS
  146.         or SHIFT-INS to accidently switch from Insert to Overwrite mode if
  147.         they keys are not released simultaneously.  
  148.  
  149. *    Personalities can no longer be created using reserved DOS characters 
  150.     (like :/\ etc.).
  151.  
  152. *    Added new Type-To-Select feature which lets you type in a name in the 
  153.     mailbox TOC to select the first message received from that person.
  154.  
  155. *       Deleting a read message that is being edited now causes a prompt to be
  156.     displayed before deletion.
  157.  
  158. *       A warning dialog now appears if the user tries to change a personality
  159.     between IMAP and POP while active tasks are running.
  160.  
  161. *       A warning dialog now appears if a user tries to change the server 
  162.     configuration while active tasks are running.
  163.  
  164. SEND/CHECK/FILTER MAIL
  165. ----------------------
  166. *    Added new EUDORA.INI setting "NewMailUpdateFrequency", which defaults
  167.         to 25.  This is the setting that determines how many messages have to
  168.         be initially spooled before post processing can begin.
  169.  
  170. *       Messages that have duplicate UIDLs are now logged in eudora.log if
  171.         full logging is enabled.
  172.  
  173. *       Insert System Configuration now doesn't include win.ini and 
  174.         system.ini.
  175.  
  176. *    Eudora does not shut down a dial-up networking connection that it has 
  177.         not initiated. This behavior can be modified via the options for
  178.         Advanced Network. The settings for hang-up after sending/receiving
  179.         and disconnect on exit are only enabled in the case of eudora 
  180.         initiating the dial-up connection.
  181.  
  182. *    Added an option to unload the winsock.dll for trumpet winsock users 
  183.         under Tools|Options|Advanced Network.
  184.  
  185. *    Added a new EUDORA.INI setting "RasUseExistingConnection", which 
  186.         controls whether RAS should use an existing connection if one is 
  187.         available. The use of an existing setting is the default, as it was
  188.         in previous versions of Eudora.
  189.  
  190. *    A personality cannot be deleted when active tasks belonging to it 
  191.     are running.
  192.  
  193. *    Fix for Chinese font with Chinese characters causing hang.
  194.  
  195. *    Fixed a symptom with the system timezone not being used when the 
  196.         timezone would not change for daylight savings - this only affected
  197.         Windows NT.
  198.  
  199. *    Added a hidden EUDORA.INI setting ("MDNSendAddress", default to 0/off)
  200.         that controls whether or not the actual address of the sender should 
  201.         be transmitted when doing a Message Disposition Notification (i.e. 
  202.         response to a read receipt). Helps get around a problem with some
  203.         SMTP servers that try to reject spam by checking if the sender's
  204.         address is in the same domain. 
  205.  
  206. EDITING/VIEWING/PRINTING MESSAGES
  207. ---------------------------------
  208. *       Made change to outgoing message style to the following.  If a message
  209.         has some html markup that was typed in as the body of the message,
  210.         such as when a person wants to email an HTML code snippet, then the
  211.         message is forcibly saved as html. The html tags will then be marked
  212.         up accordingly.
  213.  
  214. *       Fixed an issue where moving the focus to the preview pane would cause
  215.         the last Undo action to be unavailable.
  216.  
  217. *       Fixed a problem where the sorting the mailbox by date caused some 
  218.         emails dates to be sorted wierd.
  219.  
  220. *    Paste as quotation now displays quoted text correctly when selecting
  221.         multi-line text.
  222.  
  223. *    Header and footer information get displayed now when printing with
  224.         the MS viewer (Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and later).
  225.  
  226. *    Fixed a symptom of HTML codes being displayed when replying to a 
  227.         formatted message using plain-text stationery.
  228.  
  229. *    The "ShowAllHeaders" optional entry in EUDORA.INI now displays all 
  230.         headers in a message window when set to a non-zero value.
  231.  
  232. *    Invalid GMT offsets causing incorrect dates are now processed better 
  233.         by Eudora.
  234.  
  235. IMAP
  236. ----
  237. *    The Mailbox tree and the Mailbox menu are now identical in how they 
  238.         display folders and mailboxes.
  239.  
  240. *    Modified the "Find..." behavior when an IMAP personality is present.  
  241.         If the search began in a local (POP) mailbox, only local mailboxes are
  242.         searched.  If the search began in an IMAP folder, the search is
  243.         limited to the IMAP account containing the mailbox where the search
  244.         began.  Added a new EUDORA.INI setting called "SearchAllImapAccounts",
  245.         which if set to "1", the search will loop through all accounts 
  246.         regardless of where the search was started.
  247.  
  248. *    IMAP mailboxes are now correctly sorted in the Mailbox pull-down menu.
  249.  
  250. *    Mailboxes now get bolded even if "Tools -> Options -> Getting
  251.         attention -> open mailbox" is not set.
  252.  
  253. *    Fixed an IMAP issue with blanks in mailbox names. Eudora now removes 
  254.         leading and trailing blanks when creating mailboxes - however, these 
  255.         are recognized in previously created mailboxes.
  256.  
  257. *    Fixed a symptom of check mail not working if mailboxes were not 
  258.         downloaded locally.
  259.  
  260. *    Filters with criterion of Header To: (or other related ones like 
  261.         Reply to:) contains should now be functional.
  262.  
  263. *    Added support for IMAPPort INI setting. The entry MUST be in the 
  264.         section for that personality in the INI file.
  265.  
  266. *    Fixed IMAP timezone problem - reply caused incorrect time displayed 
  267.         in Attribution (At xxxxx, you wrote...).
  268.  
  269. *    The size of a message on the server is used for IMAP TOC (Table of 
  270.         Content) summaries as the value of the size. 
  271.  
  272. *    Changed the way mailbox bolding in IMAP works. Parent with a child
  273.     that has unread msgs no longer un-bolded even if itself has no unread
  274.         msgs.
  275.  
  276. ADDRESS BOOK/DIRECTORY SERVICES
  277. -------------------------------
  278. *    Identical nicknames in different address books are now handled better
  279.         when the nickname is selected from the address book.
  280.  
  281. *    Fixed a symptom of Eudora hanging with use of address book entries 
  282.     not ending with a newline.
  283.  
  284. *    Implemented handling of multiple values per attribute for LDAP 
  285.         databases.
  286.  
  287. SPELL CHECKING
  288. --------------
  289. *    Added eudora.ini setting "InteractiveSpellCheck=0" to get the cool
  290.         spell checking (red double-underlining) by default. Holding down
  291.         <shift> toggles to the other mode of spell checking.
  292.

  294. LIMITATIONS
  295. -----------
  296. *    The import settings/mail is not supported for Outlook 97 and 
  297.         Netscape 3.x versions.
  298.  
  299. *    Offline support for IMAP is not implemented.
  300.  
  301. *    The file browser tabbed window does not display system dll's.
  302.

  309. what happened, what version of Eudora you have, any error messages Eudora

  311. computer you have, which operating system you're using, and anything else you
  312. think might be relevant.

  339. BELOW.  IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE, PROMPTLY RETURN

  348. component(s) shall set forth Licensee's rights with regard to such software 
  349. component(s) and shall take precedence over the terms and conditions of this

  399. make one (1) hard copy of such documentation for each User.

  401. 3.  Technical Support.  Licensee must register in order to be 
  402. eligible for technical support via telephone or electronic mail.  
  403. For a period of ninety (90) days, commencing with the date of 
  404. Licensee's first telephone call requesting support, Licensee will 
  405. have access to technical support for the Software for the 
  406. technical contact designated on the product registration card 
  407. included with this package or specified via electronic mail 
  408. registration, subject to Licensee's compliance with QUALCOMM's 
  409. instructions for accessing such support and standard verification 
  410. procedures.   Upon the expiration of the above-described ninety 
  411. (90) day period, Licensee may extend technical support on a 
  412. per-incident or annual fee basis in accordance with QUALCOMM's 
  413. then pricing and terms.  Upgrades to the Software and its 
  414. documentation, if any, are not included and may be sold 
  415. separately.
  416.  
  417. 4.  Termination.  This License is effective until terminated.  
  418. Licensee may terminate this License at any time by destroying all 
  419. copies of the Software and its documentation.  This License will 
  420. terminate immediately without notice from QUALCOMM if Licensee 
  421. fails to comply with any provision of this License.  Upon 
  422. termination, Licensee must destroy all copies of the Software and 
  423. its documentation.
  424.  
  425. 5.  Export Law Assurances.  Licensee agrees and certifies that 
  426. neither the Software nor any other technical data received from 
  427. QUALCOMM, nor the direct product thereof, will be exported 
  428. outside the United States except as authorized and as permitted 
  429. by the laws and regulations of the United States.  If the 
  430. Software has been rightfully obtained by Licensee outside of the 
  431. United States, Licensee agrees that Licensee will not re-export 
  432. the Software nor any other technical data received from QUALCOMM, 
  433. nor the direct product thereof, except as permitted by the laws 
  434. and regulations of the United States and the laws and regulations 
  435. of the jurisdiction in which Licensee obtained the Software.  The 
  436. Software may not be exported to any of the following countries:  
  437. Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, or Syria.
  438.  
  439. 6.  Government End Users.  If Licensee is acquiring the Software 
  440. on behalf of any unit or agency of the United States Government, 
  441. the following provisions apply.  The Government agrees: (i) if 
  442. the Software is supplied to the Department of Defense ("DOD"), 
  443. the Software is classified as "Commercial Computer Software" and 
  444. the Government is acquiring only "restricted rights" in the 
  445. Software and its documentation as that term is defined in Clause 
  446. 252.227-7013(c)(1) of the DFARS; and (ii) if the Software is 
  447. supplied to any unit or agency of the United States Government 
  448. other than DOD, the Government's rights in the Software and its 
  449. documentation will be as defined in Clause 52.227-19(c)(2) of the 
  450. FAR or, in the case of NASA, in Clause 18-52.227-86(d) of the NASA 
  451. Supplement to the FAR.
  452.  
  453. 7.  Limited Warranty on Diskettes.  QUALCOMM warrants the 
  454. diskettes on which the Software is recorded to be free from 
  455. defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a 
  456. period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase.  QUALCOMM's 
  457. entire liability and Licensee's exclusive remedy will be 
  458. replacement of the diskettes not meeting QUALCOMM's limited 
  459. warranty and which are returned to the place of purchase within 
  460. such warranty period.  QUALCOMM will have no responsibility to 
  461. replace a diskette damaged by accident, abuse or misapplication.  
  462. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES ON THE DISKETTES INCLUDING THE IMPLIED 
  463. WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE 
  464. ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO NINETY (90) DAYS FROM THE DATE OF 
  465. PURCHASE.
  466.  
  467. 8.  Disclaimer of Warranty.  Licensee expressly acknowledges and 
  468. agrees that the use of the Software and its documentation is at 
  469. Licensee's sole risk.  The Software, documentation, and technical 
  470. support are provided "AS IS" and without warranty of any kind.  
  471. Information regarding any third party services included in this 
  472. package is provided as a convenience only, without warranty by 
  473. QUALCOMM, and will be governed solely by the terms agreed upon 
  474. between Licensee and the third party providing such services.
  475.  
  476. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED UNDER APPLICABLE LAWS, QUALCOMM 
  477. AND QUALCOMM'S LICENSOR(S) (FOR THE PURPOSES OF PROVISIONS 8 AND 
  478. 9, QUALCOMM AND QUALCOMM'S LICENSOR(S) SHALL BE COLLECTIVELY 
  479. REFERRED TO AS QUALCOMM) EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, 
  480. EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED 
  481. WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, 
  482. AND NONINFRINGEMENT.  QUALCOMM DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE FUNCTIONS 
  483. CONTAINED IN THE SOFTWARE WILL MEET LICENSEE'S REQUIREMENTS, OR 
  484. THAT THE OPERATION OF THE SOFTWARE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR 
  485. ERROR-FREE, OR THAT DEFECTS IN THE SOFTWARE WILL BE CORRECTED.  
  486. FURTHERMORE, QUALCOMM DOES NOT WARRANT OR MAKE ANY REPRESENTATIONS 
  487. REGARDING THE USE OR THE RESULTS OF THE USE OF THE SOFTWARE OR ITS 
  488. DOCUMENTATION IN TERMS OF THEIR CORRECTNESS, ACCURACY,

  508. In no event shall QUALCOMM's total liability to Licensee for all 
  509. damages, losses, and causes of action (whether in contract, tort, 
  510. including negligence, or otherwise) exceed the amount paid by 
  511. Licensee for the Software and its documentation.

  513. 10.  No Waiver or Assignment.  No delay or failure to take action 
  514. under this License will constitute a waiver unless expressly 
  515. waived in writing, signed by a duly authorized representative of 
  516. QUALCOMM, and no single waiver will constitute a continuing or 
  517. subsequent waiver.  This License may not be assigned, sublicensed 
  518. or otherwise transferred by Licensee, by operation of law or 
  519. otherwise, without QUALCOMM's prior written consent, provided that 
  520. Licensee may assign this License upon written notice to QUALCOMM 
  521. in instances in which such assignment is to an entity which 
  522. acquires all or substantially all of the business of Licensee, 
  523. whether by merger, consolidation, or acquisition of assets.

  525. 11.  Controlling Law and Severability.  This License shall be 
  526. governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the 
  527. United States and the State of California, as applied to 
  528. agreements entered into and to be performed entirely within 
  529. California between California residents.  If for any reason a 
  530. court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of this 
  531. License, or portion thereof, to be unenforceable, that provision 
  532. of the License shall be enforced to the maximum extent permissible 
  533. so as to effect the intent of the parties, and the remainder of 
  534. this License shall continue in full force and effect.

  536. 12.  Entire Agreement.  This License constitutes the entire 
  537. agreement between the parties with respect to the use of the 
  538. Software and its documentation, and supersedes all prior or 
  539. contemporaneous understandings or agreements, written or oral, 
  540. regarding such subject matter.  There shall be no contract for 
  541. purchase or sale of the Software except upon the terms and 
  542. conditions specified herein.  Any additional or different terms 
  543. or conditions proposed by Licensee or contained in any purchase 
  544. order are hereby rejected and shall be of no force and effect 
  545. unless expressly agreed to in writing by QUALCOMM.  No amendment 
  546. to or modification of this License will be binding unless in 
  547. writing and signed by a duly authorized representative of 
  548. QUALCOMM.
